When I Was One-And-Twenty
by A. E. Housman
When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies But keep your fancy free.”
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
When I was one-and-twenty I heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
‘Tis paid with sighs aplenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.
Does anyone in the house watch Happy Endings? I finally got around to finishing the season and one of the main characters Penny (played by the hilarious Casey Wilson, former SNL cast member) meets the man of her dreams. They both hate reading and had such an amazing easy gong conversation… problem is, his name was Douglas Hitler.
Funny enough, I met a nice boy named Stalin. Yup, that’s his first name… I understand that culturally speaking, the name of a person could mean something beautiful and amazing but I don’t think I could date or marry a guy with the name Hitler, Stalin, etc. I feel bad for judging a person by their name when they had no say in it at all especially since they have probably been judged their entire life because of it. We have all heard the famous Shakespeare quote from Romeo & Juliet, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet.” Though the quote is somewhat out of context but should a person’s name matter?
